Magellan Health says it manages the fastest growing, most complex areas of healthcare, bringing solutions to health plans, employers and state and Federal programs. Its business units include Magellan Healthcare and Magellan Federal.
Ownership has shifted in recent years. In January 2022, Centene Corporation completed its acquisition of Magellan Health, and Magellan operated under Centene’s Health Care Enterprises umbrella. Then, according to Centene’s mid-2026 quarterly filing, Centene signed a definitive agreement in December 2025 to sell the remaining Magellan Health businesses, and the sale was still pending as of June 30, 2026. For you as a member, the most important thing is what your current plan documents and ID card say.
Magellan as a Behavioral Health Manager
With many plans, your medical insurer or employer hires Magellan to run the mental health and substance use side of your benefits. Magellan Healthcare says its behavioral health network has over 118,000 credentialed providers available in person, by telehealth and through apps, and it lists substance use disorder among its focus areas.
In practice, this means Magellan may be the company that:
- Keeps the network of addiction treatment providers.
- Reviews requests for higher levels of care.
- Coordinates case management during treatment.
Your actual benefits, such as your deductible, copays and covered services, still come from the health plan or employer plan Magellan works for.
Does Magellan Cover Rehab? Levels of Care It Manages
Magellan’s care guidelines include criteria for partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient and outpatient treatment for both psychiatric and substance-related conditions. Here’s how those levels line up with our programs:
- Partial hospitalization (PHP): Magellan describes PHP as structured, medically supervised day, evening or night treatment. Our addiction PHP offers full-day programming five days a week.
- Intensive outpatient (IOP): planned, structured services over multiple weeks. Our addiction IOP meets three days a week for three-hour sessions.
- Outpatient treatment: individual and group therapy on a less intensive schedule, often as part of aftercare.
If you need medical detox, keep in mind that alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can be life-threatening and needs medical supervision. We don’t provide detox on site, but we can coordinate it with residential care at The Ranch Pennsylvania before you step down to outpatient care.
Many people with a substance use disorder also live with depression, anxiety or trauma. We offer integrated dual diagnosis treatment, and medication-assisted treatment may be available when clinically appropriate. Ask your plan how these services and any related medications are covered.
Medical Necessity and Authorization
Before covering higher levels of care, Magellan usually reviews whether the treatment is medically necessary. Magellan says it uses MCG Behavioral Health Guidelines and its own Magellan Care Guidelines, with the 2026-2027 Magellan Care Guidelines taking effect October 10, 2026. Criteria can differ by level of care, plan and state.
For addiction care specifically, Magellan’s guidelines say it uses The ASAM Criteria and other state-developed guidelines when required by state regulations or by the account it serves. Your treatment provider typically submits clinical information, and Magellan decides whether to approve care and for how long.
Your Coverage Rights
Federal law gives you some protections no matter who manages your benefits. Substance use disorder treatment is an essential health benefit in Marketplace plans, and those plans can’t turn you down for a pre-existing condition. Under the parity law, plans generally can’t set higher copays or stricter visit limits for addiction care than for medical care, or require preauthorization for all mental health and substance use treatment.
