Prescription medications save lives, but some of the most commonly prescribed drugs in America – opioid painkillers, benzodiazepines, stimulants and sleep medications – can also lead to dependence and addiction, even when taken for a legitimate reason. Because the drugs come from a pharmacy rather than a street corner, prescription drug addiction often hides in plain sight. The Ranch Pennsylvania Outpatient Services treats prescription drug addiction and the conditions underneath it at our Outpatient Center in Lancaster, PA.
Commonly misused prescription drugs
Opioid painkillers
Oxycodone (OxyContin, Percocet), hydrocodone (Vicodin, Norco), morphine, codeine and tramadol relieve pain but produce tolerance and dependence quickly. Misuse can progress to heroin or fentanyl when prescriptions end. Learn more about opioid addiction.
Benzodiazepines
Xanax, Klonopin, Valium and Ativan treat anxiety and insomnia. Long-term use leads to dependence, and abrupt withdrawal can cause seizures. Learn more about benzodiazepine addiction.
Stimulants
Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse and similar medications treat ADHD. Misused for focus, energy or weight loss, they can cause anxiety, insomnia, heart problems and a pattern of use similar to methamphetamine addiction.
Sleep medications
Ambien, Lunesta and related drugs can cause dependence, memory problems and dangerous behaviors, especially when combined with alcohol or other sedatives.
Signs of prescription drug addiction
- Taking medication in higher doses or more often than prescribed
- Running out early, “losing” prescriptions or seeing multiple doctors (doctor shopping)
- Using medication for the feeling it produces rather than the condition it treats
- Crushing, snorting or injecting pills
- Buying pills from friends or online
- Mood swings, sleep changes, secrecy about medication
- Withdrawal symptoms when a dose is missed
- Continuing to use despite problems at work, home or with health
Why prescription drug addiction is dangerous
Counterfeit pills sold outside the pharmacy system frequently contain fentanyl, and a single tablet can be fatal. Combining sedatives – opioids, benzodiazepines, sleep aids, alcohol – dramatically increases the risk of stopped breathing. Stimulant misuse raises the risk of heart attack and stroke. And because prescription drugs are often started for a real medical problem, stopping them without a plan can leave that problem untreated.
Treatment for prescription drug addiction
Levels of care
- Medical detox and residential treatment – for people who need 24-hour medical supervision or a fully structured living environment. Many clients complete this phase at The Ranch Pennsylvania, our residential facility, before stepping down to outpatient care.
- Partial hospitalization program (PHP) – full-day treatment five days a week at our Lancaster Outpatient Center, with the option to live at our Outpatient Residence. PHP typically lasts 8–12 weeks.
- Intensive outpatient program (IOP) – three-hour group sessions three days a week while you live at home, typically for 5–6 weeks.
- Aftercare and alumni support – relapse prevention planning, alumni meetings and referrals to ongoing therapy and community recovery groups.
Treating the whole picture
Effective treatment starts with a careful medical review of every medication a client takes, followed by a safe taper or detox where needed. At The Ranch Pennsylvania Outpatient Services, clients receive psychiatric evaluation and medication management – including non-addictive alternatives for pain, anxiety, ADHD and sleep – alongside therapy that addresses the habits and emotions tied to misuse. Because many people began using prescription drugs to manage depression, anxiety, trauma or chronic pain, our mental health care is integrated with addiction treatment.
Frequently asked questions
My medication was prescribed. How can I be addicted?
Addiction is about the pattern of use, not the source. If you are taking more than prescribed, craving the medication, or unable to stop despite problems, treatment can help.
Will I be able to treat my pain, anxiety or ADHD without the medication?
Usually, yes. Our medical team works with you and your physicians on non-addictive alternatives and behavioral strategies.
Is stopping prescription drugs dangerous?
It can be, especially with benzodiazepines and some sleep medications. Never stop abruptly without medical guidance. We coordinate safe tapers and detox as needed.
