Does MultiPlan cover mental health treatment? MultiPlan itself doesn’t pay for care, because it is a PPO network company (now named Claritev), not an insurer. The health plan that uses the MultiPlan or PHCS network decides your mental health benefits, and many of these plans do cover therapy, psychiatry and programs like PHP and IOP, though coverage depends on your plan. MultiPlan, Claritev and Your Health Plan
MultiPlan unveiled its new brand, Claritev, in February 2025. The company calls itself a technology, data and insights company that gives access to care through provider networks and works to reduce healthcare costs and balance bills. Its network solutions include primary PPO networks featuring PHCS, complementary networks such as the MultiPlan Complementary Network, and networks for government-sponsored plans.
What Claritev does not do is just as important. According to its member support page, Claritev does not offer insurance, does not administer benefit plans and does not pay claims. The MultiPlan or PHCS logo on your card simply means your health plan uses that network to give you a broader choice of providers who offer discounted services.
Does MultiPlan Cover Mental Health Treatment Under Your Plan?
Your plan’s mental health benefits come from your insurer or employer plan, and federal law offers important protections:
- Essential health benefits. HealthCare.gov states that all Marketplace plans cover mental health and substance abuse services as essential health benefits, including behavioral health treatment such as psychotherapy and counseling, and mental and behavioral health inpatient services. Marketplace plans also can’t deny you coverage or charge you more because of a pre-existing mental health condition.
- Mental health parity. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act covers group health plans and insurers. The Department of Labor notes that most plans can’t charge higher copays to see mental health providers, and a majority can’t require preauthorization for all mental health treatment when similar rules don’t apply to medical care.

Mental Health Services Plans Commonly Cover
Plans that include behavioral health benefits often pay for several kinds of care. Depending on your plan, that may include:
Outpatient therapy
Weekly sessions with a therapist or counselor. The National Institute of Mental Health explains that psychotherapy helps people identify and change troubling emotions, thoughts and behaviors, and that it can be used alongside medication or as an alternative to it.
Psychiatric care
Evaluations and medication management with a psychiatric provider. Your plan’s pharmacy benefit usually determines what you pay for prescriptions.
Partial hospitalization (PHP)
Our mental health PHP provides full-day programming five days a week at our Lancaster Outpatient Center. Most clients complete it in about 8 to 12 weeks.
Intensive outpatient (IOP)
Our mental health IOP meets for three-hour group sessions three days a week while you live at home, typically for about 5 to 6 weeks.
These programs treat depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorder, PTSD and trauma, and bipolar disorder, with or without substance use. Therapies include CBT, DBT, cognitive processing therapy (CPT), and individual, group and family therapy.
Authorization and In-Network Care
Because MultiPlan doesn’t administer benefits, your health plan or its administrator handles any prior authorization or medical necessity review. For PHP and IOP, your plan may ask for clinical information about your symptoms and why you need this level of care. Our admissions team can help gather what your plan asks for.
Network status matters, too. Providers in the network your plan uses have agreed to discounted rates, so in-network care usually costs you less. Claritev’s member page points members to its “Find a Provider” search tool and notes that your ID card may list a number for finding providers. Your plan’s own out-of-network rules decide what happens if you see someone outside the network.

How to Check Your MultiPlan Coverage
- Find your health plan’s name and member services number on your ID card. That’s who answers benefit questions, not MultiPlan.
- Sign in to your plan’s member portal and look for mental health or behavioral health benefits.
- Ask specific questions: Is mental health PHP or IOP covered? Is prior authorization required? What are my deductible, copay and coinsurance?
