Mental health coverage is protected by federal law. HealthCare.gov lists mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment as one of the 10 essential health benefits that all Marketplace plans must cover. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act adds another layer: according to CMS, plans that offer mental health benefits generally can’t place less favorable benefit limitations on them than on medical and surgical benefits. That covers things like copays, visit limits and prior authorization rules.
Aetna says on its member mental health page that it aims to support members at every step, whether you’re in crisis, newly diagnosed or looking for preventive care. The exact services and costs, though, come from your plan documents.

For commercial plans, Aetna states that it will use the Level of Care Utilization System (LOCUS) and its child and adolescent versions for mental health medical necessity reviews. Which services need precertification?

- Mental health PHP: full-day programming five days a week at our Outpatient Center, usually for about 8 to 12 weeks. Aetna generally requires precertification for PHP.
- Mental health IOP: three-hour group sessions three days a week while you live at home, typically for about 5 to 6 weeks.
Therapies include CBT, DBT, cognitive processing therapy (CPT) for trauma, experiential therapy, and individual, group and family therapy, along with psychiatric evaluation and medication management. PHP clients may also live at our Outpatient Residence, a 16-bed home in Lancaster with 24/7 support staff and transportation to programming.
